SLW 178 served at F28 Homerton during its Operational life. I drove this fantastic machine many times.

This was on a low loader in Morecambe over the August bank holiday weekend does anyone know where it was heading or whether in now lives in North west England?

I have this photo as a screen saver and the more I look at it, it appears to have to twin rear wheels ?.
I had SLW 177 at Holloway and this had only a single rear wheel as I assumed all the F 101s did .
Am I wrong or is it an optical illusion.

On page 34 about half way down on the LFB flicker site there is a photo of SLW 178 before it had blue beacons fitted, that clearly shows it had single rear wheels.

A previous owner installed two tyres for safety. The studs just took it!

There is a comment on this site that the F101s with single rear tires were more than a little tail happy in the wet, which is understandable given the relatively tiny footprint of a single tire.

The very first ERF PE supplied to Newcastle in 1967 also started out with single rear tires - and was also very quickly retrofitted with duals for the same reason. I don't know if any other ERFs were ever delivered with singles, but have never heard of any!

Quite a lot of American fire trucks were built in the 1920s and 1930s with single rears, but these all had either front or mid mount pumps, had small centrally located water tanks, and no real weight over or behind the rear axles. As tanks got bigger and equipment loads increased, single rear tires soon disappeared...

I am certain SLW 178 did not spend all of its operation service at F28 Homerton. I drove it during the dustman's strike of 1969 and logged thirty three shouts on a fifteen hour night shift when it was running out of F26 Bethnal Green as a pump. The pump escape was PUC154 and the same type of appliance. H gear box and through first to get into reverse if memory serves me well.
