Rear pump/controls Maudslay

Mike Cotton has asked for a shot of the rear with pump/controls on the Maudslay. The pump on the left is the AEC Merryweather while the right one is the Maudslay Merryweather. The question concerning some machines being AEC and others identical units being Maudslay is a good question, one worthy of some very involved research. Possibly the records of both Merryweather and AEC would shed light on this question. One clue that comes from the book "Blue Triangle" wherein Alan Townsin notes that Maudslay provided a number of their chassis for AEC vehicles and refers to certain production numbering. Possibly libraries close to the factories might be the depositories for such documents. Lots of luck

Fantastic photo Bob thanks for posting. All too often we don't get the see the 'business end' of trucks like these. Lots of little differences... I wonder why... maybe an unanswerable question I fear... Look out for a Maudslay rear end picture I have....

I believe that Maudslay chassis' have the letter "M" cast on the axle ends, certainly on the front axle

AEC owned Maudslay from 1950 and from 1950-57 some 138 fire appliance chassis were assembled at the Maudslay Alcester works using Regent III components. Merryweather handled the marketing and the Pump escapes had a shortened chassis with bodies by Park Royal. The Turntable Ladders were the standard Merryweather 100' type as used on the wartime Leyland TD7 chassis. For home use these had enclosed cabs, but for export the open half-cab style like the TD7s was used. The first batch of TLs were normal control and some had Meadows Petrol engines.
