Well Pav, I nearly cried when they did away with them, no electronics to go wrong, take them anywhere, up sidestreets and alleys. Very stable and totally reliable. A wheel escape drill made you confident in yourself and your mates and you didnt need a multi gym to keep you fit! Too much emphasis on gadgetry nowadays, Australia runs some marvellous basic kit for the volunteer brigades, are there any ecapes still operational in Ozz?

John, I am not aware of any escapes in Australia still in operation apart from those that are mounted on restored appliances. It is possible that on the odd occasion the boys run them up but as the years grow longer there are probably few of us willing to attempt the climb! There were obviously standard requirement tests for these pieces but short of scanning the Manual of Firemanship, I can't recall what they were.

Pav, quarterly and after use test was to pitch and chock at full extension, two lines suspended underneath and the wieght of four men applied two on each line. If no visible sagging, one man then jumped the rounds. Annualy, the escape end was supported on a trestle and all cables, pullies etc cleaned and inspected. Welds were also checked.
