Frankfurt Ladder

To make this site more international, a contribution from the Fire Brigade Frankfurt am Main (Germany). This turntable ladder is based on a Mercedes Benz Atego 1228 L Atego with a 23 metre ladder of Magirus. This engine has a very short turn, because the last axe can turn.

The forward placement of the drive axle and the fully steering rear axle give this special chassis exceptional manuverability. Although it looks odd, it really works!

It is a bit surprising that fire services in other countries have not adopted rear steer tandem axle chassis for aerials. They do appear in the Netherlands and some Scandinavian countries, but are not seen very much anywhere else.

I recently saw this actual ladder in service with a small volunteer fire company in Poland, where they demonstrated its amazingly tight turning circle. It still has the unusual color scheme and the "Feuerwehr" lettering on the front! It shares a recently rebuilt and extended fire station with a very modern Scania pump water tender, a Peugeot light rescue squad truck and a rather ancient Jelcz articulated tanker-trailer which carries around 18, 000 litres - as the station response area includes some areas without any hydrants.
