Sorry to hear about your loss my friend, but on this picture your father looks very proud and so he should being a fireman during such a period of hard times for all involved.

This is history and without people like your father, i'm certain that we might not be allowed to post these pics.

Thanks for posting this photo of your dad and the Leyland pump; sincere condolences on the passing of your father. I have a question and a comment, the comment first: the picture was taken after August 18, 1941, as that's the day the National Fire Service was created. The question concerns the markings on the Leyland: it is indeed marked as being an integral part of the 11th Fire Force, but on a right back locker it is noted as being part of a service or brigade---it is not clear on the computer screen. Can you read it from the otherwise excellent photo? After the NFS came into being all name places were deleted on virtually every kind of truck, van, even road signs as a security measure. Fire trucks moving from place to place were simply logged in as being from, for example, 11B2b===llth fire force, B Division, sub division 2, and station b. So, this was either taken in the very early days following nationalizaton or right after the war before the NFS was discontinued and equipment turned back to local control. Did your dad ever give a hint about this?

I've finally been able to add a color photo of a LEYLAND Pump Escape similar to the one your Dad drove during NFS days. The one I've put on this site is picture 13898 taken several years ago.

Hi Mick, sorry about your loss, my dads ex AFS and later Leeds City and in his late eighties. I never tire of his stories and memories. I hope you have more pictures of your dad like this as they say " every picture tells a story".

The light defelectors on the headlights suggest that the photo was taken before the end of the blackout which was, I believe, in December 1944.

Interesting escape - an all steel Merryweather which, if I remember correctly, were either 55 or 60 ft rather than the standard 50ft. Appliance looks to be in pre NFS livery of lined red with the addition of NFS markings as well as Thurrock Fire Brigade title, no doubt later to become all over grey.
