Pictured during the 2005 fire expo at the NEC in Birmingham, prior to going on the run in Norfolk at Kings Lynn fire station now registered AY55ERZ is the new Emergency Tender based on a Mercedes-Benz Econic chasis with TVAC Plastisol bodywork. having sat in it at the show, the drivers legroom is very tight for a 6 foot person like myself.

this "emergency tender" is now referred to as an "EPU" or "Environmental Protection Unit" and has moved to become SPR (Sprowston) callsign N29HO

The Econic was originally developed as a “bin wagon” chassis, without much consideration for things like driver legroom. The focus was on easy access and egress for crew members frequently getting in and out of the cab, as well as a low height cab for the overhead mechanism on some types of these vehicles. This example has the later full height cab, but the original low profile cab was - and still is - very popular for aerial applications, for obvious reasons. Because the engine is located behind the cab, the Econic chassis is very rarely used for pumpers and rescue squads, as it ends up with quite limited body room if a crew cab is added. One advantage of the set back engine however is that on versions with the high roof (like this one) there is actually room for four people sitting in the front of the cab. On the low cab, the two centre seats are not an option because there is not enough headroom.
