Leyland Metz TL remains
These are the remains of BDY 507 a Leyland Metz Tl formerly with the Borough of Hastings Fire brigade now at The West of England Transport Museum in Winkleigh in Devon the registration no visible is nothing to do with the vehicle its just on a bumper thats resting there!

Thanks for posting these two shots of the Leyland Metz BDY 507 that had a long career in Hastings; what a sad ending. In 1965 I was fortunate to photograph the trio of classic 1938 Leylands: BDY507-Metz 100 TL, BDY508-limousine pump escape with rear pump; BDY509-fully enclosed van-type body with side mount pump.
The pump escape and the aerial, turntable ladder, ran from a station at the end of a short residential street, while the van-tyle rig ran out of a large shed in back of the station. When I have the images transferred from slide to cd I'll post pictures; these three were true British classics; maybe the other two have been preserved.

BDY 509 is definatly preserved I look forward to seeing your pics posted of the three appliances, BDY 507 has a lower height than 'normal' Metz TL's to fit into the station in Hastings - you see in those days the people that bought appliances 'knew what they were on with and planned for it' how many brigdes nowadys are buying/leasing appliances only to find they won't fit in the station or under a bridge in the stations patch or they're overweight and unsafe ! ok rant over!

I think, having seen the TL on Anglesey after speaking to you a year or so ago this one - BDY 509 is in slightly better condition although it only has the main ladder (I actually sat on the head of the ladder looking towards the turret) and it was very solid! the one in Anglseey is rotten - due to its close proximity to the sea and the elements ? However the Anglesey one has an engine and gearbox while this one does not me thinks some brave, no VERY brave person should attempt to make one out of two?

Hey Andrew thanks for filling me in on the Metz from Hastings. I've always thought there was something a little different about its height, but no one ever explained that there was a definite intent in lowering it. I saw a few Metz while in your country at that conference in London in 1965 and each stands taller than this one. Thanks.
