This appliance is similar to the new FM9 rescue pumps the NIFRS are putting at stations. (Pic 885) I believe the NIFRS rescue pumps have a "plastic" body.
is this the engine that a firefighter died in? i heard of a firefighter in scotland being tragically killed when his pump was involved in a serious RTA

i wsas looking at the other similar appliance and commented on how high i felt it looked, i really hope that the design of this appliance was not a contributary factor in the rtc
The single-vehicle accident took place Wednesday 23 January 2008 in Clackmannshire, Scotland; the truck was responding to an Automatic Fire Alarm at a school [False Alarm]

This is a very sad story, but these accidents were at one time not entirely uncommon.
Some years ago Greater Manchester FRS initiated a new standard procedure for AFA response, motivated by the rapid growth in these types of calls.
One pump only will respond to all AFA incidents, which are not confirmed to involve an actual fire. It will not display flashing lights and it will not operate its siren or horns. It will obey all traffic laws and signals.
As a result, the service has reduced its total road traffic accident count by over 30%, without any actual fire incidents materially deteriorating as a result of the slower attendance.
In common with many other fire services Worldwide, GMFRS experienced the fact that only 3% of AFAs were actually reacting to a fire. In all these cases the incident was minor and could be tackled by a single crew arriving a few minutes later than if they were "on the bell".
In countries where AFA systems are uncommon, such as Italy and Spain, false alarm runs account for less than 10% of all calls. In the UK they seem to run around 20%, and in the US they can go as high as 40%!
