Harvey, thanks for your comments regarding the old pictures I'm sending in.
I need a little help on an old photo before posting.Can you or(Ian Moore)
help me.The very old picture I've just had re-copied is of a Bedford once
used at Brighton(Reg...XUF 999).I beleave this was a rescue/salvage tender
from the late 1950's.I photographed it during the 1970's but have no info.

Yes, XUF 999 was a Bedford TJ/Miles ET, that passed to East Sussex from Brighton and was in 1985 converted into a BAT by its post-1974 owners. Wasn't this the one that after being sold off was converted into a recovery vehicle ?

I don't know if this and my previous message will appear in order (if they don't it will probably lead to some confusion) but my reference to the possibility of XUF 999 being converted out of sale into a Recovery Vehicle is to be ignored. It was obviously one of the WrTs that was converted, as I remember it (unlike XUF 999) had the aperture where a single centrally mounted bell had been.

Ian, in reference to XUF 999, the old Brighton Emergency Tender, do you know
what year of manufacture please?.This must be late 1950's, or very early 60's.
Regarding this vehicle being turned into a recovery vehicle after coming out
of service is quite posible because Fred White purchased it and had it for
some time at his yard in Shoreham-by-Sea, Sussex, along with some other fire
appliances, one being a lovely Turntable Ladder.I've though not seen the old
Emergency Tender since the 1970's when I took my picture....

Ian, ref...XUF 999-this was I just found out a 1956 Bedford, and yes it did
become a B.A.T. in 1974 on emalgamation and was actually still around in the
1990's.The vehicle that became a breakdown truck was another 1956 Bedford, a Bedford J4, this was new to Brighton...Reg JSU 720.This vehicle came out of
service in 1971 and was converted by Harwoods of Pulborough, West Sussex and
used until 1984 then sold for scrape.In 1987 it was purchased, fully restored
and started appearing at shows/rallies, etc.
Any idea what...GDY 420F was?.This was another East Sussex appliance which I
beleave could be a Bedford TK, and was origanally maybe a rescue tender/B.A.T.
or a Salvage Unit.Also which station was this allacated to?.Thankyou for any
help you can give on tracing any info on this one for me...

Ian, thanks for the info on GDY 420F, the East Sussex Emergency Tender.Tell
me, how can I find out just from a registation what brigade an appliance was
with?.I've just had several old negatives re-copied and one picture is of a
Bedford/Miles(I Beleave)water tender, all in red including lockers.This very
nice old photo was taken back in mid 1970's, but I have no info at all.The
registration of the vehicle in question is....YJH 660.Can you help?.

Hi Pete, Really the only way is someone with extensive searchable databases, especially where older appliances are concerned. As regards the one you mention, it's a Hertfordshire registration, but I only have YJH 662 & YJH 663 - could it be either of those ?

Ian, yea brill mate, its def...YJH 663, the 3 looked like a zero(0)and thanks
for checking on the brigade for me.I've searched mags, old show programms etc,
but come up with nothing.I can now start to post the pictures.Many thanks.

Hi, GDY 420F was a Pump Emergancy Salvage Tender or PEST as it was known in Hastings.It was built on a Bedford TK with HCB Angus bodywork, it had the ability to pump and could be called to do so in the old Borough days.ITspent all its ops life at Hastings being replaced a 6 wheeled jeep in 1984 which was later written off.The old Bdford spent its last days as an HGV training vehicle. Hope this all helps.
