This is a Smeal/KME(I think) that serves the City of Breman, Georgia USA, 1000/750. Note the hard suction hose, most City Fire Departments don't carry hard suction hose due to the availability of fire hydrants. Breman is in a mostly rural area of West Georgia and may have to get water at a draft on occasions.

Ah, to escape the joys of "drafting" - trying to suck water up a height, with a Centrifugal Pump - fussy thing, any little bit of air getting in - and "no go".

Incoming water, under pressure, from a hydrant makes such a difference.

For "Drafting"; those old engines with Piston Pumps (Ahrens-Fox) or Rotary (Gear) Pumps, that could cope with air bubbles, had something going for them.
