1970 Dennis F45 ex Northern Territory Fire Service

This F45 fire truck was originally supplied as a tropical cab pumper to the NT Fire Service, and later locally modified to become a water carrier in the Darwin rural area. The tank equipped was apparently so large, that the appliance had problems braking when fully loaded.

Hello Lou,
Do you have the registration number and chassis number of this vehicle? Also have you any more pictures of this truck and do you know who the local builders where.

Oh my goodness, I'm not sure what to say, , , , Lou, you have a macabre way of holding our interest!

Hi Wayne - The truck shows an old NT registration plate of "1I" as in "one eye", but this would have been after it was removed from service. The chassis number is 119F45B. I have been told that the modifications were carried out by the firefighters themselves, operating out of No 3 (Palmerston) Station. It was also suggested by some fellow Dennis enthusiasts that someone with some left-over metal and a sense of humour must have put it together! I'll post another picture of the rear of the truck.
And Pavel - I bet you haven't got one like this in WA! Apparently after it was modified, the tank had to be shortened to lighten the load and allow better braking!

Oh, another Tanker, languishing away, in a field.

Pretty good looks - not a bad job, for a "Do It Your-self" job, by local firemen.
Can see where she might have been originally a bit heavy for that single rear-axle - well, can never carry enough water to a fire.... but it is un-nerving to feel the front-end practically waving in the air, with that load of water back there... [:-{

And, in our rural areas, I have seen some pretty awful "Home-Builts" - aka Deputy Chief Specials.

Regards, from Canada, Pat_R-B
