FDNY's engine companies just love those hard suctions!

By the way, FDNY currently has 198 operational engine companies, not 248. Over the years many have been consolidated, but the traditional higher company numbers have in many cases still been retained.

The main reason was that - as motor engines replaced steamers - the closely-packed stations were no longer as necessary, because distances to any incident were no longer limited by how far a team of horses could pull a steamer before they became exhausted.

But station numbers have continued to decline, as the numbers of incidents also continue to fall off, just as they have in other cities and countries around the World.
