Norwich Airport Foam Tender Pump

Thornycroft Nubian/Merryweather 6X6 Foam Tender Pump, bought secondhand, orignally in service with Handley Page at their aerodrome and raft aircfactory at Radlett, Hertfordshire. Rolls Royce B81 petrol engine. Carried 800 gallons (3636.8 litres)of protein foam concentrate and 100 gallons (454.6 litres) water, mixed with round the pump proportioner, capable of pumping on the move. This was our No1 machine in my days. Alongside can be seen ex AFS Green Goddess. I served Norwich Airport for 27 years from 1975, eight of them as Duty Crew Fire Service. In my fire service time we also had a Range Rover/Carmichael 6X4 conversion RIT (Rapid Intervention Tender) and ex Birmingham Airport, former MTCA (Ministry of Transport & Civil Aviation) Thornycroft Nubian with Sun bodywork. At that time we operated to Cat 5, the largest aircraft being Boeing 737-200.

Smashing, any more old Norwich Airport photos please?

My text should read "Hadley Page at their aerodrome and aircaft factory". Also should read "800 gallons of water and 100 gallons of protein foam concentrate".

Third time lucky with my text. Typos! Should of course read Handley Page.

I have more Norwich Airport pictures, I'll have to look them up. In my time there were two other Nubians (both different) a Range Rover/Carmichael RIT and even a former Green Goddess converted to foam tender!
