This is a KLF or minor alarm response unit. It has a crew cab because it is also used as the principal vehicle for the city's youth fire brigade. It is based at the central fire station and responds to minor incidents city wide.

In its KLF role it is normally crewed by either two or three full time firefighters from the first platoon.

With a population just over 100, 000 the city has two full time fire stations staffed by 112 paid full time personnel and nine volunteer fire stations with around 220 additional unpaid volunteers. One is combined with the full time central fire station, to provide second alarm cover in the central areas.

Like other German cities of this size, these stations accommodate a large fleet of firefighting, rescue, tactical, command and utility vehicles. At the present time this includes 19 pumpers and water tenders, three ladders, three rescues, four hazmat trucks, two pod carriers with eight pods and a further twenty one personnel carriers, command vans, utility trucks and specialized support units.

But unlike many towns, Kaiserslautern does not provide EMS ambulance service.

For comparison purposes, this fire brigade protects a city around the size of Darlington, York, Cambridge or Bath.
