Was Unst operating a retained service with this machine? The RAF used to provide cover for the whole island. Up until 1976 when I left, the Baltasound cupboard, as we called it, consisted of standpipe, a few nozzles and some 75 foot lengths of old AFS canvas delivery hose!
Several of these were supplied by Kerr & Smith of Cumnock and converted by Fulton & Wylie, and supplied to Highlands & Islands. Three inc the one pictured were bought back by The origonal suppliers (Kerr & Smith) C835AAS the aboves sister is now restored and shown by Jim Smith.
Thanks for that Chester, I had lost touch with what happened to the firefighting side of island life! As I left there were plans to have a domestic pump housed at Baltasound married quarters as the RAF Firefly was up on Saxa Vord hill entailing massive turnout times to the island!
