GXN 211 Austin K4 TL

New in 1944 to the National Fire Service who stationed it at both Colchester and Clacton-on-Sea at various times. It was transferred to Rhyl in March 1948 and passed to the County of Flint Fire Service. The brigade then had it converted to mechanical operation. It never had a Barton front mounted pump fitted.
Seen here at the Merseyside Fire Museum at Crosby on 15th. March 2010.

I would hope to see this in Flintshire livery again some day.

Seems to have a very short ladder? How high could it reach?

Added by David Jones on 24 July 2010.
Hey,come on Andrew,it was built to look like this from a time in British history that we should not forget.I think they've made a brilliant job only recently I believe in bringing this lovely old Austin K4 back to her original grey livery and she looks now very proud in that colour.
Great picture Dusty and thank you for sharing it with us.

75 feet Andrew

All 50 of the 1940's Austin K4/Merryweather Turntable Ladders issued to the NFS were 60ft.

Added by Peter Matten on 24 July 2010.
of course it was 60 feet Peter......senior moment !!!!....don't know where the figures 75 cam from

Saw her in Heswall two years ago in red livery. Yes we should not forget what folk went through at the time but as part of her history was in Rhyl for 17 years on active service and 5 years in Deeside prior to ending up in Hawker Sidderly's in Broughton, she would be good to see in Flintshire livery.

Don't forget the overlap between sections...

I think its good now seeing her in the original colour of the NFS,but as mentioned, maybe someone(Andrew)can oblige us with a picture of her whilst she was in the red livery.Surely someone must have a picture?.

I have one in service with Flintshire Pete but it's not mine unfortunately

Come on Flintshire/Clwyd enthusiasts lets get this or "Simon the Snorkel" back and roadworthy. Flints/D&M/Clwyd need preserving, find them and I can sort out funding. I loved the old Clwyd but there not much left!

Anybody have a photo of GXN 234 a similar appliance with a Barton front mounted pump, once Widnes Ex Lancs then St Helens (Merseyside) ?

Added by Alan Lea ex Cheshire Fire Brigade as was. on 10 September 2010.
I think Simon Ryan the Merseyside Fire & Rescuce Service historian may have a photo of GXN234 as in the book Fire Brigades of Merseyside. There is a picture of it with the other St.Helens appliances back in 1952. It states that it was a powered ladder.
