Dennis of South Yorkshire Doncaster 1989.

Further to my previous postings of various South Yorkshire machines seen on the whistle stop visit to Doncaster back in the late 80's, I enclose a view of BWG323T which I'd forgotten I'd taken. (it was on a different negative strip). I wonder if it was the reserve machine at the time as it has no ladders.

I am sure that in the earlier series' of Londons Burning (from series 3) they used ex South Yorkshire machines, for LB they didnt exactly put them in LFB livery, as they remained exactly to this picture.

That looks like the rear of Barnsley Chris?

Why didn't they use London appliances?

According to Mike Hebard who will know. The cab on the SS only has a small 'window ' between the back and front cabs due to the front part tilting. The RS has a fully open 1 compartment cab. The SS is no good for filming internal cab footage.

Good morning all. You are quite right Neal about the filming aspect of the RS, the cab was a lot better for interior shots. The reason for the RS's from South Yorkshire was as follows.

In the pilot London's Burning and the first two series the TV series makers had been using in service London Shelvokes. London SS's were still very new.

A fuss was made from within the Brigade about using 2 front line appliances for filming so the series makers had to look for alternatives.

Hestair Dennis got involved and searched the UK for Dennis's as permanent film vehicles. The first of the Dennis RSs were being withdrawn from service at 10 years old both from GMC and South Yorkshire but only South Yorkshire had any available.

BWG322T & BWG323T were both supplied to London's Burning through Hestair Dennis and were Londonised as best as possible. No SS Dennis appliances came on the market for several more years.

323 had a spectacular end being turned over and rolled down a bank at the then Chobham test track. It was subsequently broken up for spares as the damage was too severe. BWG322T lives on in North London.

Hope this helps with the questions.

Best wishes to all, Neal have you had any rain lately!!

Hi Mike. We had 2.2ins of heavy dew in Morecambe last Friday but no serious flooding round here. However there were 2 HVPs out in Wigan, 2 in Calderdale and Lancs's was out to Croston just south of Preston. Cumbria was hit yesterday. I wonder if they are missing all the withdrawn 2nd pumps?

BWG 322T can be seen at picture #22797 when presunably owned by Hestair Dennis at the Slyfield factory in Guilford. I can confirm it is still at Pump House Museum Walthamstow London E17 as I saw it there the other day but stupdily did not photograph it.

BWG 323T was on the run with South yorkshire fire service and was at Ringinglow Fire station before being used in londons burning then there used Brampton 1 VDT420Y and Goldthorpe 1 which was VDT427Y
