1939 Bedford MLZ
An old 1939 Bedford MLZ original registration JL 7022 which ran out of Kirton fire station, Lincolnhire under the then Holland Fire Brigade. Was replaced in the late 50's with a Commer. The vehicle carried various extinguishers a short wooden ladder but no water supply or pump, it would have normally towed a trailer pump behind. the bodywork was by a local firm in Spalding.

A beautiful little rig, and unique lines.
Looking at the cabin-top lines, that firm in Spalding had to be boat-builders - they have done a great job of the coach-work; and now in preservation.
Thanks for bringing her to us.

It's nice to see an "after" photo of this preserved 1939 Bedford which was so typical of small town appliances. The old picture I have shows it with its original license number, painted on the left fron fender and looking as if it has been left in a field to rot away. Did you take more pics of it, from the other side, with the sun in back of you, for instance?

remained in production until 1953.The appliance was one of 2 purchased by
the Boston Rural District Council Fire Brigade in 1939 to tow a trailor pump.
It had a 200gal water tank but did not have a pump fitted. After the war this
appliance became part of the Holland Fire Brigade(Lincolnshire)and actually
during its last few years of service, it was converted to a hose layer before
finally going out of service in 1956.

There have been so many awful-looking "home-builts" [some appear on this Site] around that this one is a joy to behold, as to what can be done on a humble commercial chassis.
BTW, my province (New Brunswick) still has a few "home-built's" in service.

According to the programme for the show, it had a local owner.

I took some 25 years ago of this appliance at a show with the trailor pump.It
was at that time actually showing its origonal registration-JL 7022.It looks
like its been fully restored since I last saw it and looks good.Nice picture.
